What is mouth ulcer?

Mouth ulcers are painful sores in the mouth. They have a diameter of about three to four millimetres. An ulcer is grey/white or yellow, with a red infected edge. Ulcers occur on the inside of the cheeks, lips, on the gums or tongue. Mouth ulcers can occur in small or large groups and usually disappear in one or two weeks. Sometimes they are recurrent and keep coming back, this is called recurrent oral ulcer (ROU). Ulcers mainly occur up to the age of 20. About 20% of the adults have had a problem with ulcers.
