Prevention

Preventing warts is very difficult. Most people are infected with one ore more strains of HPV at least once in their life time. Because many strains of the virus never manifest externally as a wart, a person may never realize he is infected. Some people are more susceptible to warts than others. People who are more susceptible to the virus are more likely to develop a wart. Warts for example, are most common among children, due to their developing immune system and in people with a compromised immune system. 

 

Depending on age and living conditions, between 10 and 25% of the population have to deal with warts. In some countries this percentage rises up to 50% of the population. In these countries people may have poor personal hygiene standards and low immunity, due to poor nutrition and lifestyle.

 

Factors such as good personal hygiene, a healthy lifestyle and a strong immune system are important to decrease the chances of developing a wartIt is important not to scratch warts, because that increases the risk of spreading the virus and can lead to more warts developing. The virus is often found in moist and damp places such as swimming pools, shower rooms and gyms. Therefore it is advisable to always wear sandals or slippers in such areas. Wash and dry your feet thoroughly after visiting a sauna, pool or gym. 


Prevention tips

Although there is no sure way to prevent warts, Bye Wart! suggests several ways to minimize the risk of getting infected.

 

  • Do not scratch your wart(s), this prevents further self-infection or infecting others
  • Do not use towels, shoes or other personal items of people who have warts
  • Wear sandals or other footwear in public places, such as gyms, swimming pools and public showers
  • Do not brush, shave or clip areas that have warts so as to prevent further contamination
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after touching or scratching a wart
  • Dry your hands and feet properly
  • If you suffer from warts, it is recommended to wash your towels and flannels at high temperature after use
